The moment quickly spread across social media. The following day, Dion’s team issued an official statement addressing the unauthorized use of her music.
Trump’s Unusual Action
“Today, Celine Dion’s management team and Sony Music Entertainment Canada Inc. discovered the unauthorized use of video, audio recordings, and images of Celine Dion performing ‘My Heart Will Go On’ at a Donald Trump/JD Vance campaign event in Montana.
This is unacceptable in any form, and Celine Dion completely disapproves of this action and similar instances.”
In concluding their statement, Dion’s team questioned Trump’s strange choice: “And really, that song?”
A Misguided Choice
According to People magazine, Dion was particularly upset that the Republican candidate used her song without permission, especially in such an inappropriate context. The use of “My Heart Will Go On,” a symbol of the Titanic movie—a significant historical tragedy—during Trump’s campaign puzzled many.
“My Heart Will Go On” is the iconic theme song from the 1997 film Titanic and is one of Dion’s most successful hits.
This incident is not the first time Trump has faced criticism for using artists’ music without permission during his campaigns. In 2020, nearly 15 major music stars, including Rihanna, Neil Young, Elton John, and The Rolling Stones, threatened legal action against Trump for using their songs.
These artists have stated they do not want their music used for political purposes.
Dion’s Stance and Political Reactions
Before criticizing Trump’s unauthorized use of her music, Celine Dion had previously declined an invitation to perform at Trump’s inauguration in 2017. Meanwhile, Trump’s main opponent, Kamala Harris, has received notable support. Recently, Beyoncé agreed to allow Harris to use her song “Freedom” in her campaign—a track with empowering lyrics supporting and uplifting women of color.
Beyoncé’s support contrasts with the refusal Dion and other artists have shown towards Trump’s campaign.
